Homestay is an integral part of your learning experience at the Playas del Sur Spanish School. It is a part of the immersion process in learning a new language in allowing you to practice your daily lessons in a real life environment. Families are accustomed to students and are very understanding of your learning experience. It is also a wonderful opportunity to get to know the people of Nicaragua, their customs, foods, and culture.

A Sample of Our Homes

Upon your arrival on Sunday, the family immediately welcomes you and becomes your family away from your home country. By the end of your stay on Saturday morning, you will have become part of their worldwide family. Each home has been carefully selected according to standards that include safety, cleanliness, private bedroom that can be locked and location to school. Your home will provide a fan, purified water, towels, bed linens and pillow. Most homes will provide a bicycle for your use to school and other locations throughout San Juan del Sur.

Three meals a day are provided in your home. A typical breakfast might include eggs, bread, juice, coffee (and you will want to take some of this home with you as gifts) and fruit. Lunch is typically the largest meal of the day and might include chicken, rice, beans and salad. Another lunch might offer fresh fish caught that morning. Dinner is a lighter meal with gallo pinto (a national favorite), bread, cheese and cream. Any special dietary requirements can be arranged with your family.

When you are packing to come, you will be comfortable with shorts, tops and sandals. Just remember you are at the beach and in the tropics. However, in Managua or Masaya, Nicaraguan men only wear pants and women wear a dress or a skirt. So think about packing accordingly. Laundry is not provided in the price of your stay, but all families can make arrangements to wash your clothes in a Nicaraguan pila, or you can take a try. Additionally, San Juan del Sur has a Laundromat at Hotel Villa Isabella.

Homes have a limited telephone service. There are public phones available at the local telephone office close to the school. There are a number of Internet Cafes for checking email, Net2Phone is available to call home at a very reasonable price.
